ABOUT THIS BOOK
At once a tribute to one of Singapore’s leading legal scholars and a scholarly assessment of his contributions to the discipline.

Singaporean legal scholar Tan Yock Lin (1953–2023) was a distinguished figure in Singapore’s legal community and an emeritus professor at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore. Known for his unparalleled knowledge of Singaporean law, intellectual rigor, and deep personal integrity, Tan’s scholarship helped define and advance the study of law in Singapore. This volume brings together twelve essays by eminent legal scholars addressing the wide-ranging fields in which Tan made lasting scholarly contributions: equity and trusts, personal property, international law, and the law of evidence and criminal justice. Alongside these are personal tributes that offer glimpses into the ways Tan touched the lives of those around him as a student, teacher, mentor, and colleague.

At once an academic contribution and a work of remembrance, A Gentleman of the Law honours the legacy of a scholar whose impact will long continue to shape the legal landscape in Singapore and beyond. This volume is an essential addition to any collection on Singapore law.
