This is an outstanding volume, beautifully written and of estimable breadth...The New Harvard Guide to Psychiatry contains much wisdom within its 865 pages. It is both eloquent and elegant. The book is divided into six parts: examination and evaluation; brain and behavior; psychopathology; principles of treatment and management; special populations; and psychiatry and society. In 36 chapters, the 42 contributors...have done a superb job of clearly setting forth vast knowledge about modern psychiatry and neuroscience...In a relatively brief and physically manageable single volume, Nicholi and his colleagues present a great deal of important information in a fashion that is informative, enjoyable, and often inspiring. This fine new textbook deserves wide readership--it is worth several times its modest price.
-- John L. Schwartz, M.D. Psychiatric Times
This is an excellent volume...Each chapter is comprehensive and up-to-date, fully referenced, and with suggested additional reading. The style is lucid and refreshingly jargon-free, and there is a notable absence of the fashionable but destructive polarisation of the dynamic and the biological. The prevailing theme is one of scholarship in the service of clinical practice, with patients' needs at the centre of attention.
-- Kenneth Davison British Journal of Psychiatry
Measured against the high standards of its predecessor, The New Harvard Guide to Psychiatry succeeds not only in maintaining but also in building on this tradition of scholarship...A compilation of the work of some of Harvard Medical School's (and affiliated institutions) finest teachers, theorists, and researchers...As a guide from superb mentors, it is highly recommended.
