The essays in this publication are the outcomes from the inaugural AIGA Design Educators Community 2022 Design + Writing Fellowship.  Nineteen fellows worked both individually and collaboratively to interrogate the idea of the visual essay, to support and give critical feedback to each other, and to ultimately research, write, and design a visual essay for this publication.  Once created, these works went through an initial peer-review process specific to visual essays conducted both in-person and online as part of the AIGA National Design Conference in Seattle, Washington from October 20-22, 2022. Once the feedback was collected and shared with the fellows, a first draft of the visual essays was achieved. These essays then went through a more traditional academic peer-review process, leading to the final versions of the essays you see here.

The topics and outcomes presented within these pages represent a wide range of ideas and visual language, from examining our negotiations with nature, using design as a tool to address issues of racial justice and civic engagement, exploring the reproductive life-cycle through the lens of a designer, concepts centered on the idea of the visual essay itself, and many others. Each essay takes into account the characteristics of visual language as a powerful mechanism for delivering a message. 

As facilitators of this inaugural fellowship, the AIGA Design Educators Community is pleased with the outcomes and see this publication as a reminder and perhaps starting point for further elevating creative and scholarly research in the discipline of graphic design.

Mott Children’s Hospital, sand tray therapy is used to help this vulnerable population communicate with their healthcare team, families, and loved ones. Sand tray therapy is a window into the thoughts, feelings, and coping styles of youth struggling with life-altering illnesses and hospitalizations. It helps them process their past and present medical experiences, set goals, and teach others about their needs.
 
The sand trays and stories in this book were created by patients and families living with Cancer and Blood Disorders. Their expressions, created in the sand and conveyed through the written word, provide insight into their world. Sand tray therapy provides a sacred space to process experiences using symbols instead of language.
 
This collection of photos and personal stories was compiled so that other patients, their families, and their friends can share the authors’ journeys.

These proceedings of the 16th conference of the international society for the study of early cinema Domitor includes 26 studies and numerous rarely seen figures dealing with the often overlooked history of the crafts, trades and techniques of early cinema. By examining material culture and the institutionalization of practices into trades during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this new investigation into the skills and the techniques that defined the cinema in its early decades aims to foster a better understanding of the medium in its varied industrial and professional aspects. The art and gestures of craftspersons—including performers, camera operators, editors, directors, designers, engineers, projectionists, programmers, and critics—, like those of the factory or laboratory workers, are considered for their emerging specificity, as well as in relation to existing cultural, material and technological forms. This book shows how the industrialization of cinema, the professionalization of workers, and the standardization of techniques led to the creation (or at times, subversion) of norms, and consequently legitimized certain skills, crafts and techniques at the expense of others.
 
The intermedial approaches deployed in this collection bring into focus the influence of multiple professional worlds and cultural practices on the nascent film medium, as well as the necessary adaptations and transformations required by the latter. This circulatory dynamic concerns people and practices, studied in a non-diffusionist approach taking into account transcultural interactions. Chapters examine the mechanisms of professionalization and identity-building as they relate to professions such as filmmaker or colorist, as well as to more unexpected occupations such as accountant, censor, or chemical engineer.
 
The notion of technique is broadly defined. Several of the volume’s chapters deal with cameras or special effects, as well as with new historical investigation into mysterious technical devices such as shutters, cue systems or working samples. Going beyond this preoccupation with materiality, the collected studies also approach technique as a human and cultural activity, and thus as a set of gestures, crafts, and expertise. The book more specifically opens up a reflection on the skills of screen performers and on the training that brought the institutionalization of body techniques and film acting. The book further illustrates to an unprecedented extent that the first film workers were frequently women.
 
Several chapters are dedicated to the unconventional careers of specific film workers, with particular attention being given to the diversity and complexity of professional trajectories. Indeed, this book demonstrates that the invention of cinema was deeply enmeshed with the rise of international networks, which resulted in the standardization of technical practices within corporate and national contexts being ultimately shaped by globalization.

literacy skills — data and statistical literacy, including: statistics and data comprehension; data as argument; and data visualization.
 
Data — both raw and displayed in visualizations — can clarify or confuse,
confirm or deny, persuade or deter. Students often learn that numbers are
objective, though data in the real world is rarely so. In fact, visualized data —
even from authoritative sources — can sometimes be anything but objective.
 
Librarians and classroom educators need to be as fluent with quantitative
data as they are with text in order to support high schoolers as they engage
with data in formal and informal settings. We asked contributors to this
volume — experts in high school curriculum, information literacy and/or
data literacy — to explore the intersections between data and curriculum
and identify high-impact strategies for demystifying data for educators and
students alike.

In The Cultural Politics of the New American Studies, leading American Studies scholar John Carlos Rowe responds to two urgent questions for intellectuals. First, how did neoliberal ideology use the issues of feminism, gay rights, multiculturalism, transnationalism and globalization, class mobility, religious freedom, and freedom of speech and cultural expression to justify a new “American Exceptionalism,” designed to support U.S. economic, political, military, and cultural expansion around the world in the past two decades?  
Second, if neoliberalism has successfully employed various cultural media, then what are the best means of criticizing its main claims and fundamental purposes? Is it possible under these circumstances to imagine a “counter-culture” which might effectively challenge neoliberalism or is such an alternative already controlled and contained by such labels as “political correctness,” “the far left,” “radicalism,” “extremism,” even “terrorism,” which in the popular imagination refer to political and social minorities, doomed thereby to marginalization?  
Rowe argues that the tradition of “cultural criticism” advocated by influential public intellectuals like Edward Said can be adapted to the new circumstances demanded by the hegemony of neoliberalism and its successful command of new media. Yet rather than simply honoring important predecessors such as Said, we need to reconceive the role of the public intellectual as more than just an “interdisciplinary scholar” but also as a social critic able to negotiate the different media.
